College of Science (COS) Scholarships

Scholarship applications for fall 2023-spring 2024 are now OPEN. Fill out one application to be considered by all COS Scholarship Committees for which you meet requirements. Completing a FAFSA will increase your eligibiligy. FYI - AERI alone awarded more than $35,000 in scholarships for the current Academic Year 2022-2023! Apply at the COS scholarship site now.

General Information

  • All scholarship applications require at least two letters of recommendation, transcripts and a personal essay.
  • Incomplete applications are not eligible.

  • Information about scholarships, grants, and loans can also be found at http://financialaid.unt.edu.
  • As a reminder, this application is for awards given in Fall 2023-Spring 2024. The deadline for students to apply is Tuesday, February 28th, 2023 by midnight CST. Recommenders will have until Friday, March 3rd by midnight CST to upload their recommendation letters.

AERI Scholarships

The Advanced Environmental Reseach Institute manages 2 scholarship funds and one research fellowship for full-time students studying environmental issues. Descriptions are included below. All applications must be completed through the COS Scholarship site.

JKG Scholarships

The JKG Silvey Scholarship was created in 1994 in honor of Professor Silvey, a prominent instructor and researcher in the natural, environmental, and biological sciences for many years. Dr. Silvey founded the environmental research program at UNT.

  • Typically $1000 each, divided between the fall and spring semesters
  • Undergraduates must be enrolled in the pre-dental or pre-medicine tracks
  • Graduate students must be pursuing a degree related to the environmental sciences, as determined by the AERI Scholarship Committee
  • In your personal essay, explain your career/research goals

Water Resources Scholarships

This fund originated in 1997 as part of a group fundraising effort to provide scholarships for graduate students who have an interest in pursuing studies and environmental research to preserve, perfect, and restore our nations water resources.

  • Typically $1000 each, divided between the fall and spring semesters
  • In your personal essay, explain your career/research goals and how they align with the purpose of the scholarship founder's goals

The Bill Glaze Graduate Fellowship in Environmental Sciences

This fund originated in April 2017, by donors Terry and Paula Brewer, to support research enhancing activities of graduate students in environmental sciences with advance studies.

  • Typically $5000 to $10,000
  • Will be provided as a 3-month summer research assistantship
  • Remaining funds can be used to travel for research, purchase supplies, or attend meeting/conferences. The AERI Director must approve all spending.
  • As part of your personal essay, please include an additional page with a description of your reseach activites thus far, plus a general plan for spending the Fellowhip funds during the 2022-23 academic year.

Other Graduate Scholarships and Fellowships

There are a limited number of scholarships and fellowships for Environmental Science Graduate Students offered through the Department of Biological Sciences and the Toulouse Graduate School. A list of available awards is on the TGS website at Fellowships, Scholarships, Grants & Awards.

These awards are usually available for applicants wishing to start in the Fall semesters. If you are interested in these, you should note that application deadlines are very early, often in early February. It is strongly suggested that you begin your application process 2-3 months before this deadline to make sure that your application is in order in time to apply. Most scholarship and fellowships will require separate applications and separate letters of recommendation. If you are interested, please make sure to indicate this to your major professor once accepted in order to learn about the requirements and forms.

Beth Baird Tuition Scholarship

Beth Baird Tuition Scholarships are intended to attract and retain outstanding graduate students to enhance scholarly activity within the Department of Biological Sciences, including students in the Environmental Science Graduate Program. Recipients of a Beth Baird Tuition Scholarship are Beth Baird Scholars. Beth Baird Scholars embody the mission of the Department of Biological Sciences, and that of the University of North Texas. Beth Baird Scholars are selected on the basis of: (1) research potential and achievement, (2) academic potential and achievement, and (3) potential and achievement in professional communication and service. Scholarship applications become available in the Spring semester, please contact the Biology Advising Office for more information.
